Get Home: A Free Daily Word Puzzle

Some families have a group chat that is mostly good-morning messages. Some have one where everyone posts their word game score before 9 AM and your sister gloats when she wins.

We made a game for the second kind of family. It has one rule, and the last word is always the same: HOME.

One letter at a time

Say the starting word is COLD. You could go COLD, HOLD, HOLE, HOME. Each turn you change exactly one letter, and every step has to be a real four-letter word.

Letters that already match HOME in the same spot light up. That helps, but you don't have to keep them. Sometimes the quickest way home means changing a letter you already had right, and that feels wrong right up until it works.

If you type a word the game doesn't know, it just clears. It doesn't count as a move, so you can try things out.

How a round works

Start with a word
Every puzzle opens with a four-letter word, like TALK or COLD.

Type a new real word that differs by exactly one letter.

Watch the matches
Letters in the same spot as HOME light up green.

Reach HOME
Aim for the best number of moves shown at the top.

No clock, just a best score

There's no timer. You can leave it half done while you make breakfast and pick it up again later.

Each puzzle shows the best possible number of moves, so you know what to aim for. Match it and you get to feel quite pleased with yourself. Take a few more and you still got home, which is the whole idea.

When you're done, you can share your result. It shows your moves as green and white squares, not the words, so nobody in the group chat gets the answer from you.

Same time, every day

A new puzzle comes out every day at 00:00 UTC. That's 8 AM in Malaysia and Singapore, 5:30 AM in India, and the evening before in the US.

Missed a day? Yesterday's answer shows up once the new puzzle is out. Your stats stay in your own browser, so there's no account to make.

If your family is spread across time zones, this gives everyone the same small thing to talk about each day, even when the calls are short.
